Core Text
לְנַחֲלָה הֻקְּשׁוּ וְלֹא לְדָבָר אַחֵר.

English: They were equated only with respect to inheritance, and not for any other matter.

On the daf / in context: The phrase “they shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance” limits the elevation of Efrayim and Menasheh (and any later sons of Yosef) to the sphere of nachalah. For other communal definitions they remain under the rubric of the single tribe of Yosef.

Type of Learning

Diyuk on the limiting language of the verse — the words “in their inheritance” restrict the comparison to inheritance alone.

What Is Learned

Efrayim and Menasheh (and any subsequent sons of Yosef) share the inheritance status of the other tribes, but the equation does not extend to every other halachic or communal consequence of being a separate shevet.
