His sons and his grandsons with him, his daughters and his granddaughters, and all his offspring he brought with him to Egypt.

TT lemma: the enumeration of the seed of Yaakov.
English: “His sons and his grandsons.” Rabbi Yehudah bar Elai said: Granddaughters are like sons, but the sons of daughters are not like daughters. The verse calls them “his daughters,” while elsewhere it calls Dinah “his daughter”; this teaches that Jacob’s “daughters” were his sons’ wives, and Jacob’s descendants married their sisters and other close kin so they would not marry among the peoples of the land; therefore they were called true offspring.
