Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
מַהוּ ״כִּי פִי הַמְדַבֵּר״? אָמַר רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר: אָמַר לָהֶם, כְּפִי כֵּן לִבִּי.

English: What is the meaning of “for it is my mouth that is speaking”? Rabbi Elazar said: He said to them, “As my mouth speaks, so is my heart.”

On the daf / in context: The second unit on the same verse reads the phrase as an assurance of sincerity: the words of the mouth match the disposition of the heart.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bavli) — not a formal named middah of the 13.

What Is Learned

Yosef’s spoken words of reconciliation reflected the true state of his heart; there was no hidden resentment.
