Core Text of Chazal

English of Core Text: Rav Yehudah said in the name of Shmuel: Yosef collected all the silver and gold in the world and brought them to Egypt, as it is said, “And Yosef gathered all the money…” That teaches only about the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan; from where [do we know about] the other lands? From the verse “And all the earth came into Egypt.”

On the daf / in context: The Gemara discusses the concentration of the world’s wealth in Egypt under Yosef’s administration during the famine years, reading “all the earth” as encompassing every land.

Type of Learning: Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13; the sugya expands the scope of Yosef’s economic control from the plain sense of the neighboring lands to the entire world.

What Is Learned: Through the famine, all the silver and gold of the world were gathered into Egypt under Yosef’s hand, fulfilling a broader reading of “all the earth came into Egypt.”
