וַיְהִ֤י יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֔ף וַיֵּ֥ט אֵלָ֖יו חָ֑סֶד וַיִּתֵּ֣ן חִנּ֔וֹ בְּעֵינֵ֖י שַׂ֥ר בֵּית־הַסֹּֽהַר׃

GOD was with Joseph—extending kindness to him and disposing the chief jailer favorably toward him.

Core Text

וַיֵּט אֵלָיו חָסֶד — חֶסֶד שֶׁל מַטָּה כְּנֶגֶד חֶסֶד שֶׁל מַעְלָה.

English: “And He extended kindness to him” — kindness below corresponding to kindness above.

In context: The favor of the prison warden mirrors the kindness already shown by Heaven.

Derash on the verse (Bereshis Rabbah) — not a formal named middah of the 13. Human chesed is aligned with divine chesed.

When Heaven extends chesed to Yosef, the earthly keeper of the prison is moved to the same.
