Parashas Vayeishev · Passuk 38:1
And it came to pass at that time, that Yehudah went down from his brothers, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Chirah.
Torah Temimah points to Sanhedrin 102a.
English: “And Yehudah went down from his brothers” — it was taught in the name of Rabbi Yosei: A place designated for calamity. In Shechem they violated Dinah, in Shechem they sold Yosef, in Shechem the kingdom of the house of David was divided.
Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13. The descent of Yehudah is connected to the pattern of calamity already noted for Shechem.
Yehudah’s separation from his brothers is framed against the backdrop of Shechem as a place repeatedly associated with misfortune across generations.
