באֹותה שעה שקרא יעקב לעשו אדוני — אמר לו הקב״ה: אתה השפלת עצמך וקראת לעשו אדוני שמונה פעמים; חייך, אני מעמיד מבניו שמונה מלכים קודם לבניך.
Because Yaakov repeatedly called Eisav “my lord,” the Midrash says that God would raise eight kings from Eisav’s descendants before a king over the children of Yisrael.
Edom possessed kings while Yisrael still had none.
