And Eisav took his wives and his sons and his daughters and all the persons of his house, and his livestock and all his animals and all his property that he had acquired in the land of Canaan, and he went to a land away from the face of Yaakov his brother.
Rashi on Bereishis 36:7, citing Bereshit Rabbah 82:13 (on the reason for Eisav’s departure).
Sefaria · Bereshit Rabbah 82:13
מפני יעקב אחיו — מפני שטר חוב של גזירת כי גר יהיה זרעך המוטל על זרעו של יצחק.
“Because of Jacob his brother” — because of the promissory obligation of the decree “your seed shall be a stranger” imposed upon the descendants of Isaac.
The Midrash links Eisav’s departure to the awareness of the decree of exile and suffering that would fall upon the descendants of the covenant.
Derash on the motive for departure (Bereshit Rabbah).
Eisav left Canaan to avoid sharing in the decree of exile associated with the covenant of the pieces.
