וְיַעֲקֹב֙ נָסַ֣ע סֻכֹּ֔תָה וַיִּ֥בֶן ל֖וֹ בָּ֑יִת וּלְמִקְנֵ֙הוּ֙ עָשָׂ֣ה סֻכֹּ֔ת עַל־כֵּ֛ן קָרָ֥א שֵׁם־הַמָּק֖וֹם סֻכּֽוֹת׃
And Yaakov journeyed to Sukkot and built himself a house, and for his cattle he made booths; therefore he called the name of the place Sukkot.

על כן קרא שם המקום סוכות — על שם הסוכות שעשה למקנהו.
“Therefore he called the name of the place Sukkot” — after the booths he made for his cattle.
The name is derived directly from the temporary structures for the flocks.
