And he said: Let me go, for the dawn has risen. And he said: I will not let you go unless you have blessed me.
Sforno on Bereishis 32:26.
Sefaria · Sforno on Bereishis 32:26
ויגע. הודיעו החטא העתיד במדריכי עמו ובדאגתו בזה פסק הדבור ותקע כף ירכו בהאבקו.
“He touched” — he informed him of the future sin of the leaders of his people; in his concern over this, Yaakov’s concentration was interrupted, and the angel struck his thigh while wrestling with him.
Sforno reads the injury as a prophetic warning concerning future failures among Yisrael’s leaders.
Classical commentary on the verse (Sforno).
The injury is presented as connected to Yaakov’s concern for the spiritual future of his descendants and leaders.
