This page is an EXTRA derasha. It is not part of the main-ring PREV/NEXT chain.
And Yaakov awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely Hashem is in this place and I did not know.”
Classical sources: Rashi on Bereishis 28:16 (citing Chazal).
Lemma: ואנכי לא ידעתי.
English: “And I did not know.” For if I had known, I would not have slept in so holy a place.
Derash on the verse (Rashi citing Chazal) — not a formal named middah of the 13. The confession of ignorance becomes a lesson in reverence for sacred space.
Had Yaakov known the holiness of the place, he would not have slept there; awareness of sanctity demands corresponding conduct.
