Parashas Toldos · Passuk 26:20
The herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Yitzchak’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he named the well Esek, because they contended with him.
Rashi on Bereishis 26:20 (classical source on this passuk; not listed as a numbered Torah Temimah unit here).
Lemma / focus: עשק.
English: Dispute. “For they contended with him”—they engaged with him over it in strife and dispute.
Derash on the verse (Rashi) — not a formal named middah of the 13: the well-name is an etymology of the strife.
The well was named Esek because the herdsmen of Gerar contended with Yitzchak’s herdsmen over the water.
