Core Text

English: People used to say: Better the dung of Yitzchak’s mules than the silver and gold of Avimelech.

On the daf / in context: Yitzchak’s greatness is measured by the proverb that even the refuse of his livestock outvalued the king’s treasure.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Rashi / midrash) — not a formal named middah of the 13: “very great” is illustrated by a popular saying about relative wealth.

What Is Learned

Yitzchak grew very great; people said the dung of his mules was worth more than Avimelech’s silver and gold.
