The Complete Passuk

Yaakov then gave Esav bread and lentil stew; he ate and drank, and he rose and went away. Thus did Esav despise the birthright.

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: Scripture testifies to his wickedness: that he despised the service of the Omnipresent.

On the daf / in context: The closing verb is not neutral disdain for a family privilege but contempt for the sacred service bound up with the birthright.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Rashi) — not a formal named middah of the 13: “despised the birthright” is read as despising the divine service itself.

What Is Learned

Esav ate, drank, rose, and went; Scripture testifies that he despised the birthright—and with it the service of Hashem.
