Core Text

English: Although the line of Yishmael is counted, the essential lineage is through Yitzchak, as it is said “for through Yitzchak offspring shall be called for you.”

On the daf / in context: The opening of Yishmael’s toldot is set against the prior promise that the covenant line runs through Yitzchak.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (classical continuity) — not a formal named middah of the 13: the listing is acknowledged while the covenant priority of Yitzchak is kept in view.

What Is Learned

The line of Yishmael is recorded, yet the essential calling of offspring remains through Yitzchak, as promised to Avraham.
