Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
וּבְתוּאֵל יָלַד אֶת־רִבְקָה. כָּל הַיִּחוּסִין הַלָּלוּ לֹא נִכְתְּבוּ אֶלָּא בִּשְׁבִיל פָּסוּק זֶה.

English: “And Betuel begot Rivkah.” All these genealogies were written only for the sake of this verse.

On the daf / in context: The long list of Nachor’s descendants exists so that Rivkah’s birth and lineage can be stated; she is the point of the entire report after the Akeidah.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Rashi) — not a formal named middah of the 13. The purpose of the surrounding genealogy is fixed by the single clause that names Rivkah.

What Is Learned

The entire family register of Nachor was recorded only so that the birth of Rivkah — Yitzchak’s destined match — could be announced.
