Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
עוץ בכורו. תניא, בר קפרא אומר, איוב בימי אברהם היה, הדא הוא דכתיב איש היה בארץ עוץ איוב שמו, וכתיב את עוץ בכורו.

English: “Uz his first-born.” It was taught: Bar Kappara says, Iyov lived in the days of Avraham. This is what is written, “There was a man in the land of Uz, Iyov was his name,” and it is written, “Uz his first-born.”

On the daf / in context: The appearance of the name Uz among the sons of Nahor supplies a chronological anchor for the lifetime of Iyov.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Yerushalmi) — not a formal named middah of the 13. A genealogical name is linked to the setting of the book of Iyov.

What Is Learned

Iyov lived in the days of Avraham; the land of Uz is identified with the first-born son of Nahor listed in this verse.
