Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
ויקח את המאכלת. מכאן לעולה שטעונה סכין לשחיטה, דהכא עולה הואי כדכתיב ויעלהו לעולה.

English: “And he took the knife.” From here [we learn] that a burnt-offering requires a knife for slaughter, for here it was a burnt-offering, as it is written, “and he offered it as a burnt-offering.”

On the daf / in context: The explicit mention of the knife in the Akeidah narrative supplies a source for the requirement of a blade in the slaughter of an olah.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13. A narrative detail becomes a source for sacrificial procedure.

What Is Learned

A burnt-offering requires slaughter with a knife; the Akeidah, which is called an olah, records the taking of the ma’achelet.
