And He said, “Take, please, your son, your only one, whom you love, Yitzchak, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains that I will tell you.”
English: “To the land of Moriah.” What is Mount Moriah? Rabbi Levi bar Chama and Rabbi Chanina differ. One said: the mountain from which instruction (hora’ah) went forth to Israel. The other said: the mountain from which fear (mora) went forth to the nations of the world.
On the daf / in context: The name Moriah is etymologized either from Torah instruction or from the awe that the site would inspire among the nations.
Type of Learning
Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13. A place-name is given two midrashic etymologies.
What Is Learned
Mount Moriah is so called either because instruction went forth from it to Israel or because fear went forth from it to the nations.
