Core Text

English: “After these things.” Rabbi Levi said: After the words of Yishmael to Yitzchak. He said to him, “I am greater than you, for you were circumcised at eight days and I at thirteen years.” Yitzchak answered, “With one limb you provoke me? If the Holy One, blessed be He, were to say to me, ‘Sacrifice yourself before Me,’ I would sacrifice myself.” Immediately—“And God tested Avraham.”

On the daf / in context: An alternative motivation for the test: Yitzchak’s own boast of readiness to offer himself prompted the command that would prove the claim.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13. Sibling rivalry is read as the immediate cause of the divine test.

What Is Learned

The test came after Yishmael’s taunt and Yitzchak’s reply that he would offer himself if commanded; God then commanded Avraham to offer Yitzchak.
