Core Text

English: “And all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him.” Rabbi Elazar said: What is the meaning of “and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him”? Even ships that sail from Gaul to Spain are blessed only for the sake of Israel.

On the daf / in context: The universal blessing is extended even to commercial maritime traffic that has no direct connection with Israel, underscoring the breadth of the merit.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13. The phrase is taken to its widest possible scope.

What Is Learned

Even distant commercial ships receive blessing solely because of Israel; the merit of Avraham’s descendants sustains the prosperity of the nations.
