TT lemma: ונברכו בו.
“And all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him.” Rabbi Elazar said: What is the meaning of “and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him”? Even ships that sail from Gaul to Spain are blessed only for the sake of Israel.
Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13. The phrase is taken to its widest possible scope.
Even distant commercial ships receive blessing solely because of Israel; the merit of Avraham’s descendants sustains the prosperity of the nations.
